Anytime you get under the vehicle; you must secure the cars properly. Ensure that you do the following to guarantee your vehicle properly.
- Use jack stands in addition to your jack.
- Place vehicle in Park.
- Always set the parking brakes.
- Turn off the engine.
- Block wheels with wheel chocks or use rocks.
Don't work on a hot engine
If you are going to work on the engine such as if you plan to replace the spark plugs or that oxygen sensor, you should make sure the engine is cooled down before you start working. A hot engine or catalytic converter can cause serious burns.
- Wait at least 30 min for the engine to cool down.
Always disconnect the battery and remove the key from the ignition when working on your car. Especially when working on electrical components which include changing an alternator, changing spark plugs or ignition coils, checking fuses, etc.
All you need to do is disconnect the negative battery terminal. This is the black cable that goes to the Neg (-) battery post.Back to top
Do not remove the radiator cap
Do not remove radiator cap if your engine is hot. This will cause coolant to spray out of the radiator and cause injuries. Some newer cars have an explanation tank which can be toped off even when the engine is hot. If you are not sure check in your owners manual.Back to top
Use Gloves and Glasses
When working on cars make sure to use gloves and eye protection. Keep the following in mind.
- Use gloves
- Use glasses
- Remove rings, necklaces, jewelry
- Tie long hair
Torque Bolts to Specification
You should use a torque wrench to torque bolts to specification. Especially if you are just starting with auto repair.Back to top
Work in a ventilated area
When working on a car make sure that you are working in a well-ventilated area. If you are working in your garage, make sure to keep the door open especially in you are going to keep the engine running. Gas fumes can be very bad for your health.
- Don't run the engine for long in an enclosed space.
Prepare for the worst
Gasoline and other fluids can be very flammable. Keep a fire extinguishes near your work area.
