Gear Oil is a heavy-duty lubricant specifically for gears within the differential case. A gear oil performs five jobs. It lubricates gears and bearings to prevent wear, reduce friction and power loss, protects against rust and corrosion, removes particles from metal surfaces, and helps cool bearings and gears. In addition, gear lubricants or gear oil help reduce noise from the gearbox.

Most gear oil is a mineral oil refined from crude oil, Some gear oil is a manufactured or synthetic oil Chemical additives are mixed with gear oil to improve its load-carrying capacity. This makes an extreme pressure (EP) lubricant,  Other additives reduce the effects of heat on oil viscosity and prevent foaming rust corrosion and oil seal damage.
