The OBD-II standard is a type of diagnostic connector, pinout the electrical signaling protocols available and the messaging format. On-board diagnostic is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. The On-Board Diagnostics Parameter IDs (OBD-II PIDs) are codes used to request data from a vehicle for diagnostic purposes. In North America, all on-road vehicles and trucks sold since 1996 must meet a subset of these codes, primarily for state-mandated emissions inspections.
