How to Change the Oxygen O2 Sensor on a Nissan
In this guide, you will find instructions on how to replace the oxygen sensor on a Nissan, also known as the O2 sensor.
While the pictures in this guide are from a Nissan Quest, they apply to other Nissan models, including the Altima, Maxima, Rogue, and Frontier.
Your Nissan will have at least two oxygen sensors.
One O2 sensor is upstream (Bank1-Sensor1 ) of the catalytic converter and can be accessed from the top of the engine.
One or two sensors will be downstream, B1S2 and B2S2. The procedure is similar for the downstream O2 sensors (Bank 1 & 2, Sensor 2). For the downstream sensors, you will find it easier to access the O2 sensor from underneath the car.
When the oxygen sensor fails on your Quest, you may notice some or all of the following issues:
- Check Engine Light is ON
- A decrease in fuel economy
- Engine Hesitation or misfire
- Rough Idling
What you will need
- Park your Nissan Quest and open the hood.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Locate the oxygen sensor on your Nissan Quest. Here is the location of the upstream O2 sensor or Bank1 Sensor1 on a Nissan Quest.
- The downstream oxygen Bank 1 Sensor 2 sensor has to be accessed from underneath the engine. You will need to remove the bottom splash shield.
- Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connectors. Press the connector and pull it away to unplug it from the oxygen sensor.
- Use an oxygen sensor wrench to remove the oxygen sensor.
- Install the new oxygen sensor. Tighten the oxygen sensor to 33 lb-ft
- Connect the oxygen sensor wire harness by simply plugging it in. If you are using a universal oxygen sensor, you will need to use the diagram that came with the sensor to find out which wires to splice."
- M12 sensors: 13-17 ft-lbs
- M18 sensors: 26-33 ft-lbs
