In this guide, you will find instructions on how to replace the battery on Hyundai Elantra. This guide applies to model years: 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015.

What you will need

The OEM original battery on a 2016 Hyundai Elantra has the following specifications: 120 RC, 610 Cranking Amp (CA), 760 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), AGM 70L-DIN / 70 Ah 20 HR.

How to change Hyundai Elantra battery

  1. Turn off the engine Remove the key from the ignition. Engage your parking brakes. How to replace battery on Hyundai Elantra 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016

  2. Open the hood by pulling on the hood release lever located under the dashboard.

  3. All Hyundai Elantra cars have the battery located in the engine bay. Note that some models have a plastic cover above the battery. This will need to be removed in order to access the battery.

  4. Disconnect the battery cables Use a socket and ratchet handle to loosen the 10 mm bolt on the negative (-) terminal. Near the negative battery post, you will notice a (-) minus symbol or the words NEG / NEGATIVE stamped on the battery. If the cable resists to come off the battery terminal, try twisting the clamp then remove it. Next, repeat the process for the positive (+) terminal.

  5. Remove the battery bracket. Locate the battery clamp. Remove the 12 mm bolt on the battery clamp. Use a socket and ratchet to remove this bolt. Place both the hold-down device and the bolts aside.

  6. Remove old battery Take the battery out of the battery tray. Batteries are heavy, so grab from the bottom using both hands. If the battery has a handle, use that instead.

  7. If the old battery was fitted with an insulation sleeve make sure to remove it from the old battery and install it on the new battery. Carefully, lower the new battery on the battery tray. Pay attention to the battery +/- pole orientation. They need to be in the same location as the old battery.
  8. Reinstall the battery bracket. Ensure that the battery does not move. Try to move the battery back and forth to ensure that the battery is secure.
  9. Clean battery terminal and clamp Before you reconnect the cables, clean the terminals using the battery post brush tool.

  10. Next, connect the positive cable and fasten the terminal bolts. Now you can reconnect the positive battery cable. Last, connect the negative battery terminal and tighten the bolt. Ensure that all cable connections/ hold downs are properly tightened. Check the security of your battery by trying to move it back and forth.

The battery cables should not move or rotate on the terminals. If your car does not start, check the battery cables to make sure they are secured on the battery post.

Not sure what kind of battery Hyundai is using, but it is impossible to find one with these specs. First, the Cranking Amps are always higher than the Cold Cranking Amps on every battery I've looked at. So to buy a battery with 760 CCA, you're going to end up with 900+ CA. Also, most batteries I've seen, once you get to one with 760 CCA, it bumps up to an H6 size, not an H5. Again, not sure what Hyundai did, but it looks like they've manufactured their own special battery so it will be impossible to match at an auto parts store. I've never had such a hard time trying to find a battery to match.

Ryan, You don't have to find a battery with the exact specs. If you really want that, order the battery from the dealer. Any battery that is withing the 10-20% of the OEM battery will perform just fine. A smaller battery will be fine but may struggle in the winter months. Jim
