Volkswagen ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement

  1. Start by reading the codes with an ABS Scanner via the OBD-II port under the dashboard. This will allow you to determine which sensor is faulty. read vw codes

     

  2. Remove the plastic caps from the lug nuts with a flathead screwdriver. Loosen the lug nuts but do not remove them yet. remove vw lug nut cap
  3. Jack up the vehicle and secure it with jack stands. Do not rely on just the floor jack. The vehicle must be secured with jack stands as well. jack up vehicle
  4. Take a small flat blade screwdriver or the requisite specific Volkswagen tool.  Either will work just fine. Next, depress the small clip holding the sensor wire to the sensor, and remove the connector from the sensor.vw abs sensor wire
  5. Take a T30 Torx bit, and unscrew the sensor bolt from the wheel hub.  vw abs sensor location

     

  6. Remove the old ABS wheel speed sensor by pulling it out.
  7. Take the new sensor and install it using the same T30 bit. VW abs wheel speed sensor

     

  8. Reconnect the ABS wire and make sure it's firmly seated in the sensor.  
  9. Install the wheel and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft/lbs. 

Replacing the ABS wheel speed sensor on a Volkswagen is very simple. These instructions apply to VW Jetta, Golf, Eos, Passat, Bora, Cadi, Routan, and other models. The only thing that will be different is the part number. Make sure to order the correct ABS wheel speed sensor that will fit your particular VW.
