Procedure

Follow these steps to change the alternator on a Honda 3.5 L V6 engine.

Removal

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and let it cool down. If the engine is still hot, you risk getting burned.
  2. Pull the hood release under the dashboard and open the hood.  Secure the hood with the hood support.
  3. Locate the battery in the engine bay and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Disconnect negative battery terminal

  4. Spray penetrating oil to the bolts that you will remove especially if it is the first time the alternator will be replaced. The bolts tend to get rusted and can be difficult to remove otherwise.
  5. Remove the components that are blocking your access to the alternator, like the power steering fluid reservoir and the overflow reservoir, and any lines.
  6. Take a photo or maybe draw the serpentine belts routing, so you will not have a hard time installing it back.
  7. Using the 14mm Wrench with the pipe as an additional handle so you will not have to exert too much force to push it towards the windshield side to release the tension on the belt so you can slide the serpentine belt out. The tensioner socket may not always be 14mm. Loosen the serpentine belt honda pilot ridgeline odyssey

  8. Remove the bracket on top of the alternator. These bolts can rust and break easily. It's important to spray penetrating oil on these bolts and wait for at least fifteen minutes before you remove the bolts.  Honda alternator bracketHonda dinamo bracket removed

  10. Disconnect the positive terminal at the back of the alternator.  This is typically a 12mm nut. We had to use a few extensions in order to break this nut loose. alternator boltdisconnect positive from alternor
  11. Unplug the connector at the back of the alternator. Press the connector, then pull to unplug it. unplug connector on honda alternator

  12. Using both of your hands, you have to rock the alternator up and down while pulling it up.
  13. Remove the alternator from the vehicle. remove honda alternator

Installation

  1.  Slide the new alternator back to its position and install the long bolt, and set the torque to 33 lbs. ft.
  2. Install the top bolt and bracket of the alternator and set it to 16 lbs. ft.
  3. Install the new serpentine belt in its original routing position and make sure that the belt is seated on the pully groove.
  4. Connect the connector and terminal of the alternator.
  5. Connect the battery terminal.
  6. Start the engine and check voltage. With the engine running, you should be getting between 14.0 and 14.7 volts.

Frequently Ask Questions

How much does it cost to replace a Honda Alternator

  • The average cost to replace a Honda Alternator is between $447 and $800. Labor costs are estimated between $125 and $250, while parts are priced between $350 and $600.

How long does a Honda Alternator last?

  • The average life span of an Alternator is about 6 to 10 years. It depends on how many miles the vehicle is driven regularly and how many aftermarket accessories the owner have installed, which may cause the alternator to work overtime.

How to test an alternator?

  • Using a voltmeter, connect your positive lead to the positive terminal of the battery and negative lead to the negative terminal of the battery. You should be getting 14 v to 14.8 v, which means your alternator is working properly.

So I just replaced the alternator on my G1 Ridgeline EXL, thought I'd share some tips for you.

When it comes time to install the new alternator, you may find it doesn't fit in the bottom bracket. There is a slide bushing on the passenger side of the bracket that needs to be pushed away. All you need is a nut, a bolt, and a socket that's just slightly bigger than the bushing. Assemble the rig as you see in the photo above, and tighten the bolt. The thing should slide out of the way in about 5-6 turns. Nice and easy.

In 2013, Honda upgraded the alternator to one with a pulley decoupler, designed by Litens Automotive. This pulley significantly deduces vibrations coming from the unit, and increases overall engine efficiency. The alternators with decouplers will have a rubber shield over the pulley, whereas regular ones will have the bolt exposed. If you have a regular one, it is possible to rebuild with a decoupler.

There are two different types of power connectors. To the best of my knowledge, when Honda facelifted the RL, the connector on the back of the alternator became a bit thinner. It will not fit on older RLs, even if the physical dimensions of the actual part are the same. Double check to make sure the connector matches your truck, even if the store says the model year is correct.

There is a ground wire connecting the engine mount to the chassis of the car. Removing the s shaped bracket is necessary to loosen the serpentine belt. I suggest taking this time to replace the entire wire, as the original crimp is done very poorly and tends to start cutting the wire over time. I replaced mine with a 15$ part from Partsource, complete with terminals and strain relief. I also removed the S bracket entirely, So I don't have to remove it again to work on the serpentine belt.

Many people say you need to remove the power steering or front fan to get the alternator out of the engine bay. I did not find this to be true. If you rotate the pulley towards the firewall, it should just slip out with a bit of careful maneuvering. There are coolant and power steering lines close by, but if you are careful it's not an issue.

Good luck everybody!
