Mercedes-Benz Oil Change DIY M112 M113 V6 V8 Engines

In this tutorial, you will learn how to change oil and oil filter on Mercedes-Benz M113 and M112 engines. This is one of the most common engines used on almost all Mercedes classes from 1997-2007. The M113 engine is a V8 and often is recognized as 430 or 500 model. It is found on E, C, CLK, SL, CL, R, ML, GL, G classes. The M112 is almost identical but with smaller displacement and two fewer cylinders. The instructions are the same for both engines with one exceptiom. The oil capacity for the V8 and V6 engines is different. Check oil capacities in the next section. A complete list of applications is found at the end of the tutorial.

1. What you will need

Notes

  1. V8 models including 430 and 500 require 8-8.5 litter (quart).
    V6 models including 240 and 320 require 7-7.5 litter(quart).
  2. Make sure you install a quality filter. Fleece is recommended. Cheap oil filters degrade quickly and are not able to filter debris for 10,000 miles.
  3. We assume you have basic tools. If you don't read this article that will help you choose an automotive toolset.

2. Instructions

Step 1: Raise Vehicle

In this tutorial, we are using ramps to jack up the car. Drive your Mercedes-Benz on ramps. Place the car in park and set the barking brakes. Block the rear tires of your Mercedes-Benz. Make sure to place jack stands under the car.

Step 2: Remove engine splash shield

Remove the plastic shield from the engine. It is held in place with eight 10mm bolts. Some models use 8mm screws or plastic retainers.

Watch the following video on how to remove engine undercover (under shield).

Step 3: Locate oil drain plug

Here is a close up picture of oil drain plug on this Mercedes-Benz. Some models have the bolts in the middle of the pan towards the rear. Regardless of the location, the drain bolt is always going to be at the bottom of the oil pan. It requires a 13mm socket. Be careful with the direction. It is easy to get confused when working under the engine.

Step 4: Drain Oil

Remove oil drain plug. Allow the old oil to drain for at least 10 minutes or until there is no more oil dripping from the oil pan.

Step 5: Replace drain plug washer

Replace the drain plug washer if you have one. If your oil filter didn't come with a new washer it is better to reinstall the old washer than install the drain plug without a washer. If you install the drain plug without a washer it will leak oil. Reinstall the oil drain plug.

Step 6: Install drain plug

Reinstall the drain plug on Mercedes M112 M113 engine.

Start by adding one litter less than recommended and recheck the oil level. Add more oil as needed.

Step 11: Check Engine Oil Level
