Difficulty: Very Easy
This guide provides instructions on how to change out the battery on a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander.

Anyone can do this and it doesn't take long. We will also show how to clean the battery terminals and connectors to prevent and kill corrosion.

What You Will Need

Procedure

  1. If your car will not unlock, remove the emergency metal key from the keyfob and use it to unlock the driver's door.
  2. Pull the hood release under the dashboard (driver's side) and open the hood.
  3. Pry the plastic retainer clips up that are holding the air intake down with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool, pull the clips out of the holes.clip
  4. Push the air intake up and away to pop it off the airbox that houses the air filterfilter.outlander battery
  5. Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the nut on the negative terminal connector. Remove the negative cable.negative outlander
  6. Then, use the wrench to loosen the nut on the positive terminal connector and remove the positive cable.battery

  7. Loosen the nuts on the battery hold down with the 10mm wrench. Loosen them until the hold-down can be unhooked from the holes on the battery tray. Remove the hold-down.battery clamp

  8. Push the cables out of the way and use a battery carrier to easily remove the battery from the vehicle or get someone to help. Lift the battery out carefully, they are heavy. Get a helping hand if necessary.
  9. Take your battery terminal cleaner and pop the top of it off to use the straight wire brush. Work the wire brush inside the terminal connectors. Clean any corrosion or oxidation from them.
  10. Put the top back on the terminal cleaner. Use the round part inside the bottom of the terminal cleaner to brush the battery terminals. Work the round wire brush over the terminals until any corrosion is gone.
  11. Use a battery corrosion inhibitor spray on the terminals and connectors. Make generous coats to prevent any future corrosion.
  12. Place the new battery back inside the vehicle with the battery carrier. Use proper lifting procedures and be sure not to pinch your hands or fingers between the battery and the vehicle.
  13. replace battery mitsubishi outlander
  14. Reinstall the battery hold down. Place the J-hooks through the holes of the battery tray and tighten the nuts on the hold-down to hold the battery snug.mitsubishi battery clamp

  15. Install battery cables on terminals in the reverse order, positive first, negative last. Make sure the connections are snug but do not overtighten. Check to make sure the vehicle starts, you are all done!

These instructions apply to other Mitsubishi Outlander years including 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020.

My car won't start, how do I know if the battery is bad?

Check the condition of your battery under the hood with a visual inspection. Make sure there is no liquid or corrosion on the top of the battery or around the terminals. Check the dated sticker on the battery top to determine the age of the battery. Batteries usually last between three and seven years, depending on the type and quality.

On the dash, turn on the headlights or dome lights to see if there is power. Turn the ignition on to see if any lights come on. Dim lights indicate a low battery.

Use a voltmeter to check the voltage of the battery. Battery voltage should be 12.6 volts for a fully charged battery; anything less and the battery should be charged. If the battery is charged and still not working, have it tested on a battery load tester. The battery load tester will tell you if the battery is good or not.

What is all of the stuff around my battery?

A build-up of corrosion is common on batteries if proper charging system maintenance is not maintained. If there is a lot of corrosion it can cause a bad connection to the terminals of your battery.

Use baking soda to neutralize the acid of the corrosion. Use an industrial-strength battery corrosion cleaner to get rid of the corrosion and an inhibitor to prevent further corrosion. Installing new terminal connectors is a good idea because corrosion weakens metal over time. Reinstall the terminals snugly after cleaning the corrosion.
