BMW Radio CCC DIY Repair

A common problem with BMW radio, especially on E60 and E61 chassis in the CCC or CIC failing. The iDrive screen stays black or keeps restarting. In many cases, the problem is four chips on the main board. The solution is to replace the CCC, which is quite expensive, or repair your existing unit.

You can try fixing it following the instructions below, but there is no guarantee it will work and how long it will last.

The best solution is to find a shop that specializes in repairing BMW CCC units. You simply remove the CCC and ship it in for repair. Once the unit is fixed, just install it on your BMW; no need to code anything. You can find BMW CCC Repair Service offered even on eBay.

Instead of sending my CCC in, I decided to try to repair it myself. I had read many users had success repairing BMW radio themselves. Well, mine didn't work out as I think I overheated the board.

  1. First, I remove the CCC unit. Quite simple and straightforward. If you don't know how to remove your BMW radio, look up; there are plenty of videos and instructions radio removed


  2. Next, I had to access the circuit board with the defective chips. Reading online, it said you need to start from the top. Well, that was not quite right. On top are the DVD and CD drive but no circuit board that I was looking for. After spending 30 minutes to get to the bottom of the CCC, I realized I was on the wrong path. Time to stop and re-evaluate. Next, I started looking at the bottom of the unit, where I noticed the circuit dvd drive removed


  3. I removed the bolts, and there was a circuit board that I was looking ccc board


  4. Because the defective chips are found on the bottom of the board, I had to remove the board.
  5. Next, I used some aluminum foil to protect the circuit radio heat gun repair diy


  6. Next, I started heating up the chips. My heat gun was at 980F, and I did this for about 3 minutes.
  7. After putting everything together, the radio still did not work. I think the problem is that I overheated the chip. If I had to do this again, I would not heat up the chip for over 650F and any longer than one minute.

I know what you are thinking. If you have this problem, I would NOT recommend that you try the DIY fix. The success rate is very low. Instead, if I had to do this again, I would just let the professionals do this repair. There are plenty of BMW CCC Repair Service listed online.
