BMW Flex disc CV Joint Failure

2011-2012 BMW owners may experience loss of power (propulsion) and a loud noise from the rear drivetrain. BMW flex disc (constant velocity - CV) joint which transfers power from transmission to the rear driveshaft may fail in certain BMWs due to a weak material.
According to BMW "The flex disc may not have been produced with insufficient strength."1 If this problem occurs the BMW will not move when placed in gear. If the flex disc joint breaks while driving, it can cause damage to the underbody of the BMW. The defective flex disc was manufactured by Vibracoustic in Germany. Approximately 8750 BMWs vehicles are affected by this problem. Have your BMW checked by the dealer if it was produced during 2011-2012. Don't ignore this problem. As your BMW ages and you put more miles, the constant velocity joint may break while driving causing an accident.

2. Affected Vehicles
The majority of BMW that were affected by this problem were manufactured from Jan 2011 to April 2011.
They were sold as 2011, 2012 model years.
- E82 (1 Series Coupe incl M)
- E88 (1 Series Convertible)
- E89 (Z4) E90 (3 Series Sedan)
- E92 (3 Series Coupe)
- E93 (3 Series Convertible)
- F10 (5 Series Sedan)
- F07 (5 Series Gran Turismo)
- F01 (7 Series 740i)
- F02 (7 Series 740li)
- 2011-2012 135i Coupe, 1 Series M Coupe and 135i Convertible vehicles,
- 2011 Z4 sDrive 35i, 335i, 335d, 335i Coupe, 335is Coupe, 335i Convertible, 335is Convertible, 535i, 535i xDrive , 535i Gran Turismo and 550i xDrive Gran Turismo
- 2012 740i and 740Li vehicles.
How to verify your flex disc
- First, check the production date of your BMW. Open the driver's door and look at the sticker that has the VIN number printed on it. The production month and date are printed here. If it is from Jan 2011 to April 2011 move to next step.
- Check to see if the flexible disc is made of rubber. If it is, it doesn't need to be replaced.
- Next, jack up your BMW.
- Place the car in neutral and release the parking brakes so that you can rotate the driveshaft. Make sure the BMW is secured and will not roll.
- Rotate the driveshaft until you see the serial number on the flex disc.
- You will see three or four rows of numbers. The first number is a nine digit number. For example 760552702
- If the last digit is a 2, your BMW is affected by this recall.
- If the last digit is a 3, you don't need to replace the flex disc.
How is it fixed
To fix this problem your BMW dealer or your mechanic will need to replace the 26117610061 flex disc. The flex disc is between the transmission and transfer case and will need to be replaced if it hasn't been replaced already. The bolts should be replaced as well. If your BMW is covered by recall the BMW dealer will replace the flex disc free of charge. Make sure to replace all six hexagonal head bolts and the self-locking nuts.Back to top
If your BMW was one of the affected vehicles and you already fixed your BMW before the recall was issued, BMW may reimburse you the owner if you repaired your BMW elsewhere. According to BMW, the repair needs to meet BMW standards even if the repair was performed at an independent repair shop. We are not sure if BMW will reimburse DIYers who replaced the flex at home. You will need to provide an invoice from the repair shop that replaced the CV axle. Ask the dealer to submit customer paid repair using defect code 85 99 00 12 NA and Recall Campain 17V-067. To verify if your BMW was part of this recall call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
Your BMW may not qualify for reimbursement if your BMW was not part of the affected vehicles. Or if the flex disc was replaced with non-OEM BMW parts. It is unlikely that you will get reimbursed for towing and rental expenses.
