I have a 2003 W211 E500 (the 5.0l) that seems to be stuck in Sports transmission mode. As a result when putting it in drive it is "stuck" in 2nd great. It has the 5G-tronic, so is drivable. the dash computer says No Malfunction, but it will only stay in S mode. Park, Reverse all work completely fine, it's just like driving a manual car with only 2nd gear. I have done the Transmission reset I found online, but it is some thing else.


Please let me know if you have experienced anything like this or know what to do :-)

What you describe is that the car is stuck in limp mode. It does not have to do anything with the Sport mode. Sport mode starts in first gear. It is C - Comfort Mode ( on the older model it was W-winter) mode that started the car in second gear. But even in that setting the car would still shift tottally fine.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level. You should have transmission tube but no dipstick. You can buy the dipstick on ebay or amazon.

I would start with that.

If the fluid level is fine, let us know and I can give you couple more ideas.

thank you so much for the response, I actually whipped it over to a mechanic just to get some error codes, and he didn't charge me at all wqhich was nice...


they are as follows:


P2066 Component N15/3 (ETC control module) memory is fault.(P0715)

P2066 fault stored in component N15/3 (EGS controller).(P0715)

P2603 The voltage supply of the speed sensors is faulty.

P2221 The signal of component Y3/6b1 (ATF temperature sensor) and (or) Y3/6s1 (Starter lockout contact) is implausible.

You are in the right track but first change the 13 pin plug at the transmission. They leak oil and cause communcation issues and all the codes you describe. The plug is about $20 online and takes about 30 min. All you need is to jack the car, a 6mm and 8mm socket and some basic DIY skills. Lots of videos on that.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then I would swap the conductor plate.

Okay, so I changed the 13 pin socket thing this evening, and it started up nicely and went around the block as expected. The question I have... is, do I need to take it to MB to get them to attempt to clear the errors, so see if I have actually fixed the issue? Or will it simply clear? ( in which case, I haven't actually fixed anything but changed the socket).


If so I will have to change the board change the transmission fluid and potentially the solenoids, all of which I feel confident enough to do, just don't want to go to the extra expense if it isn't needed.



Thanks in advance, and to surmise... do I need to go to MB to get them to clear the errors, to see if I fixed the issue.
