My check engine light is on and it is not going off. I have changed the gas cap and now it stays on. Before, it would come on after I pump gas and then may or may not go off after I start the vehicle and drive it. What could be the problem? Is there any way I can reset the check engine light so that it can go off?

I have a scanner. I am located in Greensboro, NC. Something about the emission system.

Can you post the code?

You can reset the CEL with the scanner that you but that is not going to fix the problem. The light will return within a few days.

Good morning! I just saw your message!!! So, when I put the T Mobile code reader in this morning, this is what it stated the issue was. Evidently the gas cap replacement worked for the emissions problem, so now it is just the camshaft. Thank you so much for helping me. I need to get my car inspected this week and I know they will not pass it  with the CEL on. The code is DTC:P0017 Crankshaft position. Camshaft Position Correlation.

Yes it is not going to pass with the cel light on. Change the Camshaft sensor, reset the light and drive it as you normally do for 3 days to get the system ready for emissions. If you clear the cel and take it for emissions right away you will not pass.

Thank you so much with your prompt response. Ok, do you know the estimated cost to get this done? Also, how safe am I driving my car with this problem? Would I be able to ride out of town. The distance is like 1 hr and a half. How far could I drive? My mechanic lives 3 hours away too that I have back home.

I don't know for sure because I have to see how hard it is to get to it on that car. Typical cost would be around 200 to 300.

You can drive with that problem as long as you don't have any engine noise or engine overheating. Which you shouldn't.
