I just cleaned my air sensor on my 1998 Mazda 626 AutoZone diagnosed the problem for me. My engine is still sluggish, will ill fitting screws do that?
Pam, the mass air flow sensors are very sensitive. Cleaning them doesn't always work. I am not even sure if you used the right stuff, MAF sensor cleaner or not.
The screws should not matter, as long as the sensor is seated all the way in and not sticking up or allowing any air leak.
At this point, I would scan the codes and if they point to MAP change the MAF sensor with a new one.
