Trying to diagnose...So my fiance was driving my BMW 325xi the other night when she said all of the sudden the Tom's jumped from 2,000 to over maybe 4500. At which point she lost all acceleration leaving her no choice but to pull over on the side of the road. When she did,  she said that the car would only make a "clanging noise when put into gear, and that the e brake wouldn't work.  We had to get it towed home and although I work out of town,  I'm trying to diagnose/troubleshoot what the issue is. She also said that there are not any abnormal lights on on the instrument panel. And when in neutral or park it does not make the "clanging noise. I am not home to see and put my hands on it at the moment so I thought I would use my resources in hopes to get some help. I feel like it's probably a drive shaft/c.f. joint problem. All input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

From what you describe my first guess would be a failed flex disc.

Of course it could be an interval issue with the transmission but that would have trigered CEL light and limp mode

Let us know what you find out.

After some research that is exactly what I thought. She says the noise doesn't sound like its coming from the rear but I won't know until I hear it myself. Would that cause the E brake not to work?

I failed to mention mine is a 2001. Don't know if this would make a difference.
