2000 E320 4matic  only goes into 1st or 2nd and reverse Limp mode ? trans rebuilt 300 miles ago by previous  owner  where is the trans control module located ? thanks only code present is incorrect gear ratio ?

It could be the valve body or the shifter module. When you put the car in Drive do you see D on the instrument cluster next to the clock?

instrument cluster says D yes when put into gear and also engages very harshly ?

Check the transmission fluid level. You have the tube to check the fluid level but will have to get a dipstick.

Transmission control module is on the passenger side of the engine bay. Towards the back, near the windshield / firewall

I would check the 13 pin connect to the transmission. It can leak and cause the symptoms you describe.

If that's dry, then most likely the valve body is the issue. Have you read the codes from the transmission control module yet?
