The 4 Matic shifting mode does not work occasionally.  Additionally, after stopping and trying to change gears manually either forward or reverse, I need to put the shifter in park mode before the transmission will engage.  What could the problem be?  I have already checked the battery and the transmission fluid and they are okay.

I'm wondering if it's a mechanical or electrical issue.

One possibility is that the shifter module is defective or on its way out.

I would read the trouble codes by doing a full system scan. Then post the codes back so that we can get a better idea of what is going on.

What do you mean when you say that the 4matic doesn't work sometimes?

When I want to manually downshift, sometimes it works and other times it does not. This is a new phenomenon. Also, when I come to a stop and want to back up into a parking space or whatever, I have to put the shifter into PARK before it will go into REVERSE. I noticed that the C/S suspension module doesn't work either when this occurs. Two days ago that was the situation, yesterday everything was working properly !! I suspect it may be a computer or sensor problem, am I correct ?? Thanks for responding.

You need to read the codes from the transmission module. Also there is a good chance the shifter itself is the problem here. It is hard to know without reading the codes.
