Question Details

After a long drive or a hot day when you come to a stop the car shifts( locked ) from drive to park. The only way to get it back in drive mode is to shut the car off and on and then shift to drive.

What is causing this to happen and how do you fix it?

Do you have any other warnings on the dashboard? Such as the auxiliary battery

No warnings on the dashboard. The original auxiliary may need to be replaced considering there are 111K miles on the car. When the regular battery went bad there was no warnings or alerts as well. Should I change the auxiliary battery?

Brake light switch could also be the culprit causing this problem.

If you have111k miles and still the original aux battery, I would replace it. There is small chance that the aux battery is the issue, but you would normally get Auxilary Malfunction Battery warning on your dashboard. You don't seem to get that.

Besides the aux battery, I would not replace any more parts without doing a full system scan with Star Diagnsotic scanner. The dealer or any mechanic that specialized on MB can do that for your for about $100.

The  gear select can be defective. The brake light switch can as well. It is a guessing game without reading the codes.

Thank very much. I installed a new aux battery and instantly other basic feature started working properly. Will drive the car for a few days and see if the issue persist.
