Question Details

I have a 1998 Mercedes C280 Sport. I am having trouble diagnosing the problem with the turn signals. It all started a month ago when I tried to start the car. I turned the key to start the vehicle but nothing happened it was as if it was still in the in position before turning the car on. So I tried it again going from the on position and twisting the key to start it but nothing happened. I took out the key and redid those steps and the car started like normal except the fact that the turn signals didn’t work. The hazard lights work but the turn signals don’t. Today I still have that problem and I’m not sure whether or not it’s the relay or the ignition switch. I was toggling the key while driving one day and noticed that if I pushed the key up slightly it made a click noise/ feeling and then the turn signals work but If I hit a bump on the road the turn signal would go out again. Is this a problem with the ignition switch or somewhere else?

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Just wondering, does your horn work? Also, is your airbag light on?

From what you describe the problem could be the wire harness connection to the steering column or the combination switch. The combination switch is basically your turn signal switch mounted on the steering column.

If you had a professional scanner such as Mercedes Star Diagnsotics you could test to operation of the switch. Maybe you can find a mechanic that will narrow down the problem for you. Once you know what part is defective for sure, you can decide if you want to fix it or have a mechanic fix it for you.
