This guide provides on how to check the brake fluid level on a Mazda.

Driving with the brake light on is very dangerous. If the Mazda brake light comes on, stop immediately and check the brake fluid level. If the brake light doesn't turn off after you add brake fluid, do not continue to drive, or you may lose the brakes while driving. 

What you will need

  • Mazda Brake Fluid
    • The recommended type is listed in your owner's manual or top of the brake fluid reservoir cap. 


  1. Park, your Mazda, turn off the ignition, and set the parking brakes.  check mazda brake fluid level
  2. Pop open the trunk release located under the dashboard on the driver's side.
  3. Locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver's side. Clean the brake fluid reservoir with a clean cloth before removing the cap.

  5. Remove the cap by twisting it to check fluid level Mazda 5 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
  6. Add the recommended Mazda brake fluid. This Mazda requires DOT 3 brake fluid, which is stamped on top of the cap.
  7. Fill your Mazda brake reservoir with brake fluid until you reach the MAX/Full mark. Don't fill it up to the TOP of the reservoir.


If the brake fluid level is low on your Mazda, you will notice symptoms such as:

  • The brake pedal is soft when you press it.
  • Brake Warning Light in Instrument Cluster
  • Brake Warning Light stays on even if you release the parking brakes.
  • Low Brake Fluid Level Warning

Do not drive the vehicle with the brake light on.
