How do you diagnose trouble code P0458?
Start by pulling the codes from the vehicle with an OBDII scan tool; if there are other codes along with the P0458, that is an indicator of where to start looking for components in the EVAP system that are malfunctioning.
Always check the fuel cap to make sure it is closed properly. Leaving the gas cap off is the most common cause of this code.
The second most common cause of this code is overfilling the gas. Overfilling the gas tank occurs when you keep pumping gas even after the pump has stopped on its own to get that extra little bit of gas or to reach an even number on the dollar mark. Overfilling the gas tank will flood the charcoal canister and cause it to become clogged. This will set off this code, and the charcoal canister will need to be replaced.
Further diagnosis of this code will require technical automotive knowledge, including knowledge of electrical systems.
