Nissan Check Brake Fluid Level & Add Brake Fluid

Do not operate your Nissan if the brake light stays on. If you are losing brake fluid, get your vehicle diagnosed as soon as possible. 

Avoid letting any brake fluid drip on your hands or the paint of your Nissan.

What you will need

• Nissan Brake Fluid
  • Verify the correct type in your owner's manual or by looking at the top of the brake fluid cap. 
• Gloves

Procedure

1. Park the vehicle on level ground, turn off the ignition and set the parking brakes.
2. Pull the hood release under the dashboard. 

    

3. Press the hood latch release at the front of the hood. Lift up the hood and secure it open.

4. Locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver's side of the engine. (Item 4 in the following picture.)

   

    

   

    
5. Check the brake fluid level by looking at the side of the reservoir. You will notice two lines being  MAX and MIN levels. In the following case, you can see the brake fluid level right in the middle. 

   

    

6. If the level is below the minimum level, add brake fluid until you bring the level between the MIN and MAX marks.

7. Add the recommended brake fluid until you reach just below the MAX/Full mark. Do not fill the brake reservoir with brake fluid all the way to the top. 

Symptoms of low brake fluid level include:

• Low Brake Fluid Warning
• Brake Light On
• Possibly ABS warning
