What you will need
Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine. If your car has a start button, simply press twice without stepping on brakes.
All dash lights should turn on.
Connect your OBDII scanner to the diagnostic port of your vehicle.
Read the codes. If the check engine light persists after clearing the code, take note of the displayed codes and search the meaning of the codes.
There are hundreds of possible problems that can cause the check engine light on your Toyota to stay on. The most common issues are spark plugs, oxygen sensors, and catalytic converter failure. Instead of guessing what is wrong, use an OBD-II scanner to read the fault codes.
