Acura AC System Recharge DIY Guide

If your ACURA blows HOT air through the vents even when you set it to COLD and A/C is on, there is a good chance the Air Conditioner (A/C) system is low on refrigerant (see also: freon, R134a). In this guide, you will find instructions on how to charge the A/C system on an ACURA yourself.

Symptoms

The most common symptom that your ACURA is low on refrigerant is that hot air blows even when the temperature is set to cold.

What you will need

Instructions

Park Vehicle

Park your ACURA in a safe area. Turn off the engine.

Open hood

To add refrigerant we need to open the hood of your car. The hood release is located under the dashboard on the driver's side.

Locate A/C port

Locate the low-pressure port. This is where the A/C charging port is on an ACURA car. Note that there also is a high-pressure line. Don't use that line. The A/C charging kit connector will not fit on the high-pressure line port.

Remove cap

Remove the cap from the low-pressure port. The low-pressure port has an L marked on top. The line for the low-pressure side is thicker than the high-pressure line.

Connect the recharge kit

Connect your A/C hose to the charging port. Now we are almost ready to add freon to your Acura A/C system.

Turn A/C on

Before you can start adding refrigerant you need to turn A/C on and set it to the lowest cold setting. Set the fan to blow at maximum speed. Once you do this you can start adding refrigerant to your ACURA air conditioner system.

Charge your A/C system

Rotate the dial on your gauge so that the arrow corresponds to the outside temperature. Keep the freon can in the upright position. Don’t tip the can to the side as this may introduce liquid refrigerant in the a/c system which is not recommended and could lock up your a/c compressor. You want to keep the can upright and rotate it between 1 and 2 o’clock as you charge the a/c.

This process can take several minutes. When the a/c system is low on freon, the compressor may not be engaged. As you add refrigerant you should see the compressor kick in.  As you charge the system stop pressing the trigger every couple of minutes to obtain a pressure reading.   Continue adding refrigerant until your gauge reaches the charged range. Do not allow the system to overcharge.

Using the method described here you can also check the refrigerant pressure and if the system is fully charged. If you would rather leave this job up to the professionals, it will typically cost $80 to $150 for an auto mechanic to charge your ACURA air conditioner. You can charge the A/C system yourself using a recharge kit.

These instructions apply to various Acura vehicles including MDX, NSX, RDX, RL RLX, RSX, SLX, TL TLX,  ZDX, CDX, CL, VSX, EL, ILX, Integra, Legend.
