How to change Mass Air Flow MAF Sensor on BMW 3-Series 2004-2013

In this guide, you will find instructions on how to change the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on a 2004-2013 BMW 3-Series. The mass air flow sensor is held in place with two screws and is very straightforward to replace. The sensor itself is located near the air filter housing on the driver's side of the engine.

This guide applies to BMW E90 E91 E92 E93 manufactured from 2004-2013.


  • BMW is hard to start or has trouble turning over.
  • 3-Series engine stalls soon after starting.
  • The engine runs unusually lean or rich idling.
  • BMW 3-Series engine drags or hesitates when idle or under load.
  • BMW hesitates and jerks during acceleration.
  • BMW 3-Series engine hiccups.

What you will need


Open hood

Open hood of your BMW  3-Series to change the MAF sensor

Open the hood of your BMW. The hood release is located under the dashboard on driver's side.

Locate mass air flow sensor

Locate the mass air flow sensor on your BMW 3-Series The sensor is located near the engine air filter housing. Driver's side.

Unplug the wire harness

Unplug the electrical connector from your BMW mass air flow sensor.

 Replace 3-Series MAF Sensor

Remove the screws that hold the mass air flow sensor in place. These are Torx screws. 

Install new MAF on BMW 3-Series

Install the new MAF on your BMW. Tight the screws so that they are snug. Plug the electrical connector until it locks in place.

Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is used to measure the air volume and temperature of air entering the intake manifold.

MAF sensors can fail for various reasons including

  • Dirt contaminating the hot wire.
  • Oil from engine air filters that are oiled.
  • Interior failure of resistor or hot wire.

Does cleaning the mass air flow sensor help? 

Cleaning the MAF sensor is possible but it may or may not work.
