This guide shows instructions on how to set the maximum speed limit on a Tesla Model 3. Once you set the maximum speed limit, this will be the top speed your Tesla can reach. Of course, you can increase or disable the speed limiter at any time.

How to set Tesla max speed limit

  1. Ensure the vehicle is in Park.
  2. Click the car icon or  Touch Controls > Safety & Security > Speed Limit Mode on the touchscreen.
  3. Touch to enable Speed Limit Mode and Enter your PIN. 
  4. Select the maximum driving speed you would like to limit the vehicle to.

To disable the speed limiter, simply return to the same menu and enter your 4-digit PIN to disable Speed Limit Mode.

How does Tesla know the speed limit?

Teslas can even read speed limit signs using technology from Intel subsidiary Mobileye. It turns out this system is straightforward to fool. The Mobileye EyeQ3 camera detects speed limit signs, reads the number, and passes that data off to the Autopilot.

we cannot disable the speed limit on the new Tesla 3, even following the instructions and using our PIN. It is set at 70 mph and we also cannot increase the speed.
