This guide applies primarily to Hyundai vehicles with the four-cylinder engine, including Accent, Sonata, Elantra, Santa Fe, Veloster, and other models. Pictures and video are from a 2016 Hyundai Elantra.
- Hyundai jump (bangs) into gear
- Excessive vibrations inside the cabin.
- Park vehicle on a level surface. Turn ignition off and move the shifter into the Park position. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Jack up the car. If you don't have ramps make sure to use a car jack but also use jack stands.
- Secure the car with jack stands. Jacks alone are not enough to ensure that the car won't fall.
- Remove the engine undercover, also known as the splash shield. It is held in place with several 10mm screws.
- Identify the lower motor mount at the back of the engine.
- For this task, you will need a second jack. Ideally, this should be a larger jack. You will need to place this jack under the engine to support it while removing the motor mount. Support the engine with the second jack. Use a piece of wood between the jack and the engine. This will protect the oil pan from damage. You don't need to raise the vehicle. Simply use this jack to support the vehicle.
- Remove both 13mm bolts that secure the lower motor mount to the frame.
- Remove the 16 mm bolt that secures the lower engine mount to the engine bracket. If the bolt starts to spin, hold the back nut with a wrench.
- Reinstall the new motor mount in reverse order. Tighten the mounting bolts to 80 lb-ft.
Replacing the lower engine mount (torque strut) on a Hyundai is a relatively easy job. Make sure to secure the vehicle and engine properly.
