Kia P0340 Code - Camshaft Position Sensor A Replacement

Possible Causes

• Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor
• Camshaft Position Sensor harness is damaged
• Camshaft Position Sensor circuit open or shorted to ground
• Starting system circuit
• Defective ECU

Start by checking the causes listed above. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector to the camshaft position sensor. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out pins. If no visible damage is present replace the camshaft position sensor.

• OBD-II Scanner
• Mechanic Toolset Metric
  • 10mm Socket

Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement

1. Connect the OBD-II scanner into the OBD-II port under the dashboard.
2. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the accessories position.

    

3. Go to the diagnostic menu on the scanner and select read codes.

    

   
4. Check the stored codes, the scanner will show faulty code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Bank 1.

    

   
5. Pull the hood release under the dashboard and go to the vehicle's front.

    

   
6. Press the tab to the left to unlock the hood latch. Then pull the hood up and set the hood strut to hold the hood.

    

   
7. Remove the engine cover by pulling it up.

    

8. Locate the camshaft position sensor on the right side of the engine.

    

9. Disconnect the electrical connector of the camshaft position sensor by pressing the clip and pulling the connector out.

    

10. Remove the 10mm bolt on the sensor by turning it counterclockwise using a 10mm socket.

     

11. Pull the camshaft position sensor out.

     

12. Line up the new/replacement camshaft position sensor and press it in to set it into place.

     

13. Reinstall the 10mm bolt and reconnect the electrical connector to the camshaft position sensor.

     

14. Reinstall the engine cover by lining it up back to the engine and pressing it in to lock it in its place.
15. Turn the ignition switch to the accessories position again.
16. Go back to the diagnostic menu and select erase codes on the scanner.

     

17. Press enter on the scanner to erase the stored codes.

     

18. Start the vehicle a few times and check if the check engine light is still on.
