How to manually release BMW emergency parking brake

Here you will find step by step instructions on how to release BMW parking brakes manually.

You may need to manually release BMW parking brake in cases where the car battery fails or the parking brake actuator is defective.

To manually release BMW parking brakes in emergency situations you will need BMW Park Unlocking F Handle which is in the trunk.

If it is missing it can be purchased online. Part number BMW24507590395.

Instructions

Risk of injury! To prevent the vehicle from rolling, secure the wheels before releasing the parking brake. 
  1. First, secure the vehicle from rolling. Ensure the gear selector is in Park position.  manually release bmw park emergency brakes

     

  2. Lift the trunk carpet and locate the emergency kit underneath. bmw parking tool location

     

  3. Remove BMW emergency parking brake release tool (BMW24507590395) from the emergency kit. bmw emergency parking brake tool BMW24507590395

     

  4. Insert the BMW parking brake tool on the release pin located behind the panel on the right side of the trunk.bmw barking brake release 
  5. Pull the release tool up. You will need to pull hard on the release pin.  The parking brake is hard to release

BMW Parking Operation

  • Parking brakes OFF - If your BMW parking brakes fail in the released position, you will not be able to set the parking brakes when driving.¬†
  • Parking brakes Locked ON - If your BMW parking brakes in the engaged position, you will not be able to get the car out of park or drive. You can manually release the parking brake and drive. See instructions¬†below on how to manually release BMW parking brakes.¬†

I have a 2011 520d sedan. I can’t find the manual release switch in the boot on the right side or anywhere else. Any idea where it is?
