Interval
The recommended spark plug replacement interval for Mitsubishi Mirage is 63,000 miles on engines that use iridium spark plugs. If copper spark plugs are used, replace the spark plugs every 30,000 miles.
What you will need
- Spark Plugs - Iridium Spark Plug
- Gap 0.044 (in)
- Options:
- Bosch FR7SI30 0242235769
- NGK 93298 LZFR5BI-11
- Ignition Coil - Only replace if faulty.
- Spark plug socket
- Magnetic pickup tool
- 4" or longer 3/8 Extensions
- 3/8" Ratchet wrench
- Spark plug gap tool
- Clamp plier
Procedure
- Park the vehicle on level ground and allow the engine to cool down.
Pull the hood release under the driver's seat and open the hood.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Loosen the 10mm bolt on the terminal and pull it out to disconnect the battery terminal. Disconnecting the positive terminal is not necessary once the negative has been disconnected.
- Remove engine cover/air filter/hoses above or connected to the top of the engine. Use a clamp plier and screwdriver to remove the clamp on the hoses. Then use a ratchet wrench with extension to remove the nuts holding the engine cover.
Remove the hose connected to the engine cover. Use a clamp plier and screwdriver to remove the clamp and spring clamp on the hose. Disconnect the mass airflow. Just press on it to unlock, then pull it out.
- Unplug the three electrical connectors from the ignition coil by pressing it down and pulling out the connector.
Press the electrical connector, then pull it out to disconnect them.
- Remove the ignition coil. Remove the 10mm ignition coil bolts using a ratchet wrench and remove the ignition coil by moving it up and out. Inspect the ignition coil if there are cracks or breaks in them.
Removing the 10mm ignition coil bolts.
- Remove the spark plug. Use a 5/8 spark plug socket to loosen the spark plug and remove the spark plug from the engine using the magnetic pickup tool.
Loosen the spark plug by using a spark plug socket.
- Spark plugs should be pre-gapped. It is recommended to verify the spark plug gap before installation.
- Install the new spark plug and torque them to specification. When installing the new spark plugs, do not allow the new spark plugs to drop down as this may lead to the spark plug tip damage.
- Reinstall the ignition coils. Do not switch the connectors between ignition coils.
- Reinstall engine cover and other hoses that were disconnected. Reconnect the battery terminals. Negative should be connected last.
- Start the engine and let it idle. Make sure the check engine light doesn't come on.
- If ABS and traction control lights are on, turn the steering wheel to the left then to the right. Repeat it twice, then drive for five minutes to reset those warning lights.
