Are you looking to put a Mercedes-Benz transmission in neutral so that you can push the vehicle around the garage?
To set a Mercedes-Benz in neutral, turn the ignition on, press the brake pedal and move the shifter up or down until the gear changes to Neural. Be careful when you release the brake pedal because the vehicle will roll off and can cause injuries.
Keep the ignition on, and do not remove the key; otherwise, the transmission will automatically shift to Park.
Do not tow a Mercedes-Benz in neutral.
If your Mercedes-Benz has a dead battery, you will need to connect a jump starter on the battery terminals located in the engine bay then put the car in neutral.
If you need to keep your Mercedes-Benz in neutral but turn off the ignition, the procedure is more complicated.
Keep Mercedes-Benz Transmission in Neutral
By design, when you turn off the Mercedes-Benz ignition, the gear selector automatically switches to Park even if you don't press Park.
To keep the Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission neutral even after you turn off the ignition, follow this procedure.
- Bring the vehicle to a complete stop on level ground.
- Press the parking brake button to the side of the steering wheel.
- Open the driver's door, but remain in the vehicle and keep the brake pedal pressed.
- Move the gear selector stack to neutral by pressing it up or down.
- Disconnect both auxiliary and car battery.
Be extremely careful as the vehicle may roll away and cause injuries. We strongly recommend using wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from rolling away.
In 2005 and older models, it is possible to shift the transmission in neutral by overriding the shifter even if the battery or engine is dead.
