When a warning light pops up on your Audi, you can use an OBD-II scanner to read the codes. A good Audi All System Scanner will diagnose systems such as Engine, ABS, Airbag, TPMS  Transmission, Traction Control, or any other module.

A generic OBD-II scanner will only be able to read codes from the engine control module.

On the other hand, a Professional Diagnostic Scanner will be able to read all systems, clear codes, test sensors, and even perform adaptations.

How to Read Audi fault codes

1. Park your Audi on a level surface and set the parking brakes.
2. Open the driver's door and locate the diagnostic port under the dashboard.

3. Plug your scanner into the OBD2 port 
4. Turn on the ignition by turning the key to position II. If your Audi has START/STOP feature, press the button without pressing the brake pedal. 
5. Allow your scanner to turn on. Follow the promptings on your scanner to read fault codes.

Knowing which scanner to use to read Audi fault codes may be the most difficult part. Level 1 OBD2 scanners can only be used to retrieve fault codes from your Audi Engine Control Unit (ECU). Those are faults that trigger the Check Engine warning light on the dashboard.
