How to reset BMW spark plug service reminder

In this guide, you will learn how to reset spark plug reminder on BMW vehicles. Reseting BMW spark plug interval is very easy and can be performed using buttons on the instrument cluster. BMW spark plug service interval can range from 35,000 to 100,000 miles. When you perform the reset, you will the recommended BMW spark plug change interval for your car, based on OEM BMW spark plugs.


BMW Spark Plug Reset Instructions

  1. Insert the key into the ignition and turn key to Position II to power up the car. Do not start the engine. If you have push START, press and hold the START button without pressing the brake pedal. If that doesn't work, press the START button twice and that will turn on your ignition but not start the engine.
  2. On the left side of the steering wheel, you will notice a BC or Check switch. Press it until you see the date or clock displayed on the instrument cluster. 
  3. Next, press and hold the ODO RESET button on the dashboard for at least 5 seconds. bmw reset button


  4. The orange triangle will show first, but as you continue to hold the ODO reset down, service symbols will display on the center of the dashboard. 
  5. To scroll to the service you need to reset press the ODO RESET button a few times. You can also use the CHECK or UP/DOWN toggle next to the BC button on the steering wheel stalk. 
  6. When the spark plug symbol shows up on the cluster, press and hold the ODO RESET for 5 seconds. Under the symbol, you should see the words RESET? bmw spark plug reset


  7. Release and press the ODO RESET button again and hold it until RESET? changes to RESET or OK
  8. Once you successfully reset your BMW service interval reminder, the interval will show below the spark plug symbol.
  IMPORTANT: If you change the spark plug type, make sure to change the spark as recommended by the manufacturer of the spark plugs. For example: If you installed copper spark plugs that have a 40k interval but the original BMW spark plugs are platinum with a 100k mile interval, you should change your spark plugs at 40k mile mark and not after 100k miles.

An alternative method to reset BMW spark plug service reminder is to use a BMW specific OBD2 scanner that allows the user to perform Conditional Based Service (CBS) reset.

NOTE: BMW change spark plug change interval varies between 35,000 and 100,000 miles. Always verify BMW spark plug interval by looking it up on your owners manual or calling a BMW dealer. 

BMW with platinum or iridium-tip spark plugs

  • 100,000 mile interval
  • Exampe N52 motor

BMW two ground spark plugs

  • 60,000 mile interval
  • Example: N36 E37 E85 E46 M3 M Roadster

BMW M Series Spark Plug Interval

  • 35,000 mile interval
  • E60 M5 E63 E64 M6 E90 E92 M3

BMW Cooper Spark Plug Change Interval

  • 40,000 mile interval 
  • Example: 135i 335i 335i Engine N54, N63
