Replace Airbag ECU Module (SRS Module Reset / Crash Data Clear)
The Replace Airbag ECU Module function, also called SRS Module Reset or Crash Data Clear, is a scanner function that clears the stored crash event data (hard codes) from the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) module after a collision. When an airbag deploys or the SRS module detects a crash-level impact event (even if airbags didn’t deploy), it permanently stores crash data and deployment records in its non-volatile memory — these are referred to as hard codes or crash codes because they cannot be cleared with a normal code clear command. On many vehicles, once crash data is stored, the SRS module is locked and the airbag warning light stays on permanently until the module is either replaced (at $500-$2,000+ for the module alone) or the crash data is cleared using a specialized scanner function.
This function can save hundreds or thousands of dollars compared to replacing the SRS module entirely. However, this function should only be used after all physical crash damage has been properly repaired — all deployed airbags replaced, seatbelt pretensioners replaced, crash sensors replaced, and all wiring inspected and repaired. Clearing crash data from a module without repairing the physical damage leaves the vehicle’s safety system non-functional, which is dangerous and potentially illegal. Common SRS DTCs that require this function include B0001-B0009 (driver/passenger frontal crash sensor), B0051-B0059 (deployment loop codes), and manufacturer-specific crash record codes. Always verify the complete SRS system is operational (no warning lights, all sensors responding) after performing a crash data clear.
