Ash Service
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Ash Service (or Ash Service Regeneration) is a maintenance function related to the long-term management of ash accumulation inside the DPF. While soot can be burned off through regeneration, the ash residue left behind from burned soot and engine oil additives gradually accumulates over the filter’s lifetime and cannot be removed through any regeneration process. This ash reduces the DPF’s effective capacity for soot storage, eventually reaching a point where the filter must be physically removed for professional cleaning or replaced entirely.
The scanner’s Ash Service function allows you to view the DPF’s accumulated ash loading percentage, reset the ash counter after professional DPF cleaning (ultrasonic or thermal cleaning by a specialized service), and reset ash-related DTCs. Ash accumulation is tracked separately from soot loading — the ECU uses calculated models based on oil consumption, miles driven, and fuel burned to estimate ash buildup. When ash loading reaches the manufacturer’s threshold (typically after 100,000-150,000 miles), the DPF warning may illuminate and cleaning or replacement is required. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II displays ash loading data and provides the reset function needed after professional DPF cleaning to restore the counter to zero.
