CAFE
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) is the US federal regulation requiring vehicle manufacturers to achieve a minimum fleet-wide average fuel economy across all vehicles they sell in a given model year. CAFE standards have progressively increased, pushing manufacturers toward smaller turbocharged engines, hybrid powertrains, electric vehicles, lightweight materials, aerodynamic improvements, and start-stop systems to meet the targets. Non-compliance results in significant financial penalties per vehicle sold below the standard.
CAFE standards directly impact DIYers because they drive the technology changes appearing in newer vehicles — turbo GDI engines replacing naturally aspirated V6/V8s, CVTs replacing traditional automatics, start-stop systems, 48V mild hybrid systems, and increasing vehicle electrification. These technologies introduce new maintenance requirements and diagnostic procedures that the YOUCANIC UCAN-II is designed to address as vehicles evolve.
