FRM Reset (Footwell Module Reset)
FRM Reset is a scanner function specific to BMW and MINI vehicles that resets or repairs the Footwell Module (FRM/FRM3), which is the electronic control unit responsible for managing exterior and interior lighting, turn signals, windshield wipers, power windows, rain sensor, headlight leveling, and other body electronic functions. The FRM is located in the passenger-side footwell area and is notorious for failure, particularly on E-series BMW models (E90, E60, E87, E70), often due to water intrusion from a clogged A/C drain or windshield seal leak. When the FRM fails, it can cause a cascade of electrical symptoms including non-functional turn signals, headlights, tail lights, or interior lights, windows not operating, wipers stuck on or inoperative, and multiple warning messages on the iDrive screen.
The FRM Reset function on the YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner can read and clear FRM-specific fault codes, reset the module’s software and learned parameters, and in some cases perform a short-coding or reconfiguration of the module after replacement. If the FRM has been damaged by water intrusion, the module itself often needs to be replaced and the new unit must be programmed (coded) to the vehicle using the scanner. The scanner can write the vehicle order (VO/FA) configuration to the new FRM so it activates the correct features for your specific vehicle’s equipment level — for example, enabling xenon headlight control, adaptive headlights, or LED tail light configuration. Before replacing the FRM, always identify and fix the source of water entry (typically the A/C evaporator drain tube or passenger footwell seam sealer), check all connectors for corrosion, and dry the footwell area completely. After replacement and coding, the scanner should show all FRM functions operational and all DTCs cleared. This is a BMW-specific function and will not appear on vehicles from other manufacturers.
