Gear Learning
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Gear Learning (also called Transmission Learning or Shift Point Learning) is a scanner procedure that teaches the TCM the precise engagement characteristics of transmission clutch packs, bands, and synchronizers. Over time, as these friction elements wear, the TCM adapts its shift pressure and timing to maintain smooth shifts. After transmission repairs, fluid changes, or TCM replacement, the old adaptation values no longer apply and must be reset so the TCM can relearn from a fresh baseline.
The YOUCANIC UCAN-II Gear Learning function clears stored shift adaptations and returns the TCM to factory-default shift calibrations. After the reset, the transmission may shift differently for 50-200 miles as the TCM builds new adaptation profiles. Drive through varied conditions — city, highway, light and heavy throttle, uphill — to help the TCM learn quickly. If shift problems existed before the reset and reappear after relearning, the transmission has a mechanical issue that adaptations were masking.
