JIS
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) defines automotive battery specifications used primarily by Japanese vehicle manufacturers and in Asian markets. JIS uses a unique battery size designation system (e.g., 55B24R, 80D26L) where the first two digits indicate battery capacity/performance ranking, the letter indicates physical size group, the next two digits indicate case length in centimeters, and the final letter indicates terminal position (R for right, L for left). JIS cold cranking tests use different conditions than SAE: testing at -15°C (5°F) rather than -18°C (0°F), with a 5-second rate, producing ratings that are not directly comparable to SAE CCA without conversion.
Japanese vehicles sold in North America typically use batteries labeled with SAE CCA ratings in addition to or instead of JIS ratings, so most DIYers in the US rarely need to reference JIS directly. However, when importing JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) vehicles or ordering batteries from Japanese suppliers, understanding JIS sizing codes ensures you get the correct physical dimensions and terminal configuration. The approximate conversion from JIS to SAE CCA varies by test conditions but is roughly: SAE CCA ≈ JIS value x 1.2. When performing battery registration (BRT) on Japanese vehicles, the YOUCANIC UCAN-II typically accepts SAE or EN ratings.
