KAM Reset
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
KAM Reset (Keep Alive Memory Reset) clears the volatile memory in the ECU where learned and adaptation values are stored, forcing the ECU to relearn all operational parameters from a fresh baseline. KAM is maintained by continuous battery power — it persists through normal key-off cycles but is lost if battery power is interrupted. A KAM Reset achieves the same effect as disconnecting the battery but can be performed more selectively through a scanner without affecting radio presets, clock, window initialization, and other convenience settings that are also lost during battery disconnect.
KAM Reset is useful after major repairs that change system operating characteristics (replacing the MAF sensor, cleaning the throttle body, replacing injectors, transmission service), when old learned values are causing problems (accumulated adaptations masking a fault), and as a diagnostic step to see if the vehicle drives differently with fresh baselines. After KAM Reset through the YOUCANIC UCAN-II, expect temporary rough idle, slightly different throttle response, and the engine to settle after 10-30 minutes of driving. If significant driveability problems persist well after reset, the ECU is trying to compensate for an existing fault — the problem is not the learned values but the underlying condition the old values were masking.
