VANOS
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
VANOS (Variable Nockenwellen Steuerung — German for variable camshaft control) is BMW’s variable valve timing system. Single VANOS adjusts only the intake camshaft, while Double VANOS (found on most modern BMW engines) adjusts both intake and exhaust camshafts independently. VANOS uses oil-pressure-operated cam phasers with electronically controlled solenoid valves. The system optimizes valve timing across the RPM range for improved power, torque, fuel efficiency, and emissions.
VANOS problems are extremely common on BMW engines, particularly the N52, N54, N55, N63, and S65 engines. Symptoms include rough idle (especially at cold start), loss of low-end torque, rattling noise at startup (worn VANOS unit), and DTCs P0011-P0019 (VANOS position codes), 2A82/2A87 (BMW-specific VANOS codes). Common causes: worn VANOS solenoid seals (O-ring degradation from heat cycling), sludged oil passages, and worn internal components in the VANOS unit. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II reads BMW-specific VANOS codes and supports VANOS solenoid Active Tests.
