48V Mild Hybrid
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
A 48V mild hybrid system uses a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a belt-driven or integrated starter-generator (BSG/ISG) to provide supplemental electric torque assist to the engine, enable smoother start-stop operation, and power regenerative braking recovery. Unlike full hybrids, 48V mild hybrids cannot drive on electric power alone — the 48V motor provides 10-15 kW of supplemental torque during acceleration (filling the turbo lag gap), enables extended coasting with the engine off, and provides smoother engine restart than a conventional starter motor. The system improves fuel efficiency by 5-15% at relatively low additional cost and complexity.
48V mild hybrid components include the 48V lithium battery (typically small, 0.5-1.0 kWh, mounted in the trunk), the BSG/ISG unit (replacing the alternator), a DC-DC converter (stepping 48V down to 12V for the conventional electrical system), and the 48V power management module. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II can read 48V system DTCs on supported vehicles. After 48V battery replacement, registration may be required similar to standard BRT procedures.
