A/C Learn

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

A/C Learn (A/C Compressor Relearn)

A/C Learn is a scanner maintenance function that recalibrates the engine control module’s knowledge of the air conditioning compressor’s engagement characteristics and the additional load it places on the engine. When the A/C compressor clutch engages, it puts a significant parasitic load on the engine (typically 5-15 horsepower), and the ECU must instantly compensate by adjusting idle speed, fuel delivery, and ignition timing to prevent the engine from stumbling or stalling. The A/C Learn procedure teaches the ECU the exact load characteristics of the compressor so it can make these adjustments smoothly. This function communicates with both the engine control module and the climate control module to synchronize compressor operation with engine management.

You should perform an A/C Learn procedure after replacing the A/C compressor, replacing the ECU or climate control module, performing a major engine repair that affects idle control, or after a battery replacement that cleared the ECU’s adaptive memory. Symptoms that indicate an A/C Learn is needed include the engine stumbling, surging, or stalling when the A/C is turned on, RPM dropping excessively before recovering when the compressor clutch engages, or rough idle only when the A/C is running. On the YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner, navigate to the Maintenance menu, select A/C Learn, and follow the on-screen prompts — the procedure typically requires the engine to be at normal operating temperature with all accessories off, and the scanner will cycle the compressor on and off multiple times while the ECU learns the load compensation values. The process usually takes 2-5 minutes and must not be interrupted.
