A/C
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
A/C (Air Conditioning) is the system that cools and dehumidifies cabin air using a closed-loop refrigerant cycle. Major components include the compressor (pressurizes refrigerant), condenser (releases heat to outside air), expansion valve or orifice tube (meters refrigerant into the evaporator), evaporator (absorbs heat from cabin air), receiver-drier or accumulator (removes moisture), and refrigerant pressure sensors. The system uses R-134a or R-1234yf refrigerant depending on model year (R-1234yf mandatory on 2021+ US vehicles).
Common A/C problems: no cooling (low refrigerant from leak, compressor clutch not engaging, blown fuse), weak cooling (partially low charge, condenser airflow blockage, cabin filter restriction), intermittent cooling (cycling clutch, intermittent sensor), and noise (compressor bearing, clutch). The YOUCANIC UCAN-II reads A/C system DTCs and commands compressor Active Tests. Note: R-1234yf is mildly flammable and requires specific recovery equipment — do not interchange with R-134a systems.
