CAN FD (CAN with Flexible Data-rate) supports significantly faster transfer rates and larger payloads than classical CAN. Standard CAN maxes at 500 kbps with 8 bytes per frame; CAN FD transmits up to 8 Mbps with 64 bytes per frame — 16x throughput improvement. Developed for modern vehicles with ADAS, high-resolution sensors, and over-the-air updates that need more bandwidth. CAN FD maintains backward compatibility — CAN FD and classical CAN nodes can coexist on the same bus.

For DIYers, newer vehicles (2020+) may use CAN FD, and scanners must support it to communicate. Scanners only supporting classical CAN may fail to connect or have limited functionality on CAN FD vehicles. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II supports CAN FD protocol for compatibility with the latest vehicle platforms.
