Control Module
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
A control module is any dedicated electronic computer installed in a vehicle managing a specific system. Modern vehicles contain 20 to over 100 modules: ECU/ECM/PCM (engine), TCM (transmission), ABS (brakes), SRS (airbags), BCM (body electronics), TPMS (tire pressure), instrument cluster, climate control, seat modules, and infotainment. Each has its own processor, memory, sensors, and actuators, communicating through CAN Bus to share data and coordinate functions.
Identifying which module governs a malfunctioning system determines what scanner access you need. A basic code reader only communicates with the engine module — ABS, airbag, TPMS, or body electronics warnings require a scanner accessing those specific modules. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II provides multi-system access across all major control modules. When a module fails, symptoms include warning lights, loss of function, and U-codes from other modules that lost communication with it on the CAN Bus.
