EN
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
EN (European Norm, specifically EN 50342-1) is the European standard for rating automotive battery cold cranking performance. The EN test measures the current a battery can deliver at -18°C (0°F) for 10 seconds while maintaining at least 7.5 volts. EN ratings produce numbers very close to SAE CCA ratings (typically within 5-10%) because both tests use similar conditions, though the EN test uses a slightly higher minimum voltage (7.5V vs. 7.2V) over a shorter initial period (10 seconds vs. 30 seconds). As a practical rule, EN and SAE CCA values for the same battery are approximately equal.
EN ratings are the most commonly used battery specification in Europe and are found on most European-market batteries alongside or instead of SAE CCA values. European vehicles’ service manuals typically reference EN ratings for battery specifications. When performing battery registration (BRT) on European vehicles using the YOUCANIC UCAN-II, you may need to enter the EN rating from the battery label. If the battery only shows one standard, the approximate conversions are: EN ≈ SAE CCA (roughly equal), and EN ≈ DIN x 1.7.
