Key Programming
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Key Programming is a scanner procedure that registers new transponder keys or key fobs with the vehicle’s immobilizer system so the vehicle recognizes them as authorized. Each key contains a unique transponder code that must be written to the immobilizer module’s memory. When all original keys are lost, key programming becomes significantly more complex (and expensive) because the immobilizer module may need to be reset or replaced, which requires dealer-level access or specialized locksmith equipment on many vehicles.
The YOUCANIC UCAN-II supports key programming on various vehicle brands, though the level of capability varies by manufacturer due to security restrictions. Some vehicles allow adding keys when at least one original key is present (add-key programming), while others support all-keys-lost programming. Common scenarios requiring key programming: replacing a lost key, adding a spare key, replacing the immobilizer module, and replacing the ECU (which may contain the immobilizer function). Always keep at least one spare programmed key — programming with an existing key is far less expensive and complex than all-keys-lost programming.
