OTA
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
OTA (Over-The-Air) updates deliver software updates wirelessly to the vehicle’s control modules through the vehicle’s built-in cellular or WiFi connection, similar to smartphone software updates. OTA eliminates the need for dealer visits for many software-related improvements, bug fixes, and feature additions. Tesla pioneered automotive OTA updates, and now most manufacturers offer some level of OTA capability. Updates can affect the infotainment system, instrument cluster, ADAS calibrations, battery management strategies, charging algorithms, and even powertrain performance parameters.
OTA-related diagnostic concerns include failed or interrupted updates (causing module errors and warning lights), incompatible software versions between modules, and changes to vehicle behavior after updates. If a vehicle develops new symptoms after an OTA update, scanning for new DTCs and checking software version information through the scanner can identify update-related issues. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II reads module software version information that can help identify whether modules are running the latest firmware.
