Transmission Relearn
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Transmission Relearn is a scanner procedure that clears the TCM’s accumulated shift adaptation values and restores factory-default shift calibrations, requiring the TCM to build new shift profiles from scratch through normal driving. This is essentially a TCM-specific version of KAM Reset targeting only transmission parameters. The procedure is performed after transmission fluid changes, clutch pack replacement, valve body service, solenoid replacement, TCM replacement, or when shift quality has degraded and you want to determine if the issue is software adaptations or hardware wear.
The YOUCANIC UCAN-II Transmission Relearn function resets shift adaptations for the specific vehicle. After performing the reset, the transmission may shift firmly, late, or erratically for the first 50-200 miles as the TCM relearns. Drive through varied conditions to help it learn quickly: city driving with frequent stops, highway cruising, gentle and moderate acceleration, and some light-to-moderate uphill grades. If shift problems that existed before the reset return after relearning, the transmission has a mechanical or hydraulic issue that adaptation was compensating for — further diagnosis is needed rather than repeated resets.
